During WWI, Hammett served as anambulance driver and returned home with tuberculosis. His fragile health madehim unable to continue workingas a detective, and he turned to writing. In 1924 he introduced the popular character,The Continental Op, and other hard-boiled characters soon followed including Sam Spade in1930's "The Maltese Falcon" and Nick and Nora Charles 1934's "TheThin Man." Working in Hollywood as a screenwriter, Hammett met the playwright LillianHellman and they remained together for the next 31 years until Hammett's deathin 1961. In 1951, Hammett was jailed for five months for refusing to testifybefore a McCarthy-era hearing.
