Mac OS X includes a panel called the Password Assistant which tells you the strength of a password entered into a standard password field, as well as how to improve the password if it finds flaws. You can see the Password Assistant when you change your Keychain password or create an encrypted disk image.
Password Tester is a more direct way to get to the Password Assistant.
