This freeware PC lock app is fairly simple to invoke and unlock, but it failed to block CTRL-ALT-DEL during our tests. Lock Platinum's four-button interface needs no instructions. As an executable file (no installation required), this app can be easily carried on a USB toolkit.

Operating Lock Platinum takes a little effort, although the process itself is simple. You have to click the lock function and enter the password twice. Some users may tire of having to enter the password twice for every lock as you can't store a password for multiple uses. The app records the number of times the system was locked and the number of failed attempts to unlock it. The stats are reset each time the program is started.

The program promises to block select key combinations that would bypass the lock. Unfortunately, our tests found the app failed to block CTRL-ALT-DEL, allowing users to shut down or restart the system. If you need to block children or very novice users while you're away from your system, then Lock Platinum may fit your needs. If you're trying to prevent more skilled users from accessing your system, this freeware is easily thwarted.

Featured Talkback

Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
