The word Zcalo is used to designate the main central square usually located in Mexican cities or towns, the most famous of which is that of Mexico City. The Zcalo, officially known as the Constitution Square, has been the heart of Mexico City since pre-Hispanic times, when it was the most important Aztec religious center. After the Spanish conquest, it was planned as the seat of powers of colonial Mexico, where the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the City Hall were built. Nowadays, the Zcalo is the destination for most political demonstrations and an appropriate place for expressing ideas, requests and concerns. It continues to be the center of both the nation and the government.
