It may stymie children, but this simple password-system lock won't slow down anyone else. Child Computer Lock's cartoonish button-based interface is certainly easy to use. All the instructions you'll need are printed right on the interface. You can quickly set a number-only pass code and lock your system's keyboard and mouse. The utility immediately blanks your desktop, disables CTRL+ALT+DEL, and restricts your mouse to the area of the interface. Since the program doesn't invoke at startup, it's easily bypassed by shutting off the power.

This isn't a secure tool for the workplace, but your preteens might find this a useful tool to keep out their younger siblings. The kids can easily set the password and write an optional hint. Entering the password is a mere matter of clicking onscreen number buttons. However, if someone forgets the password, you'll have to reinstall the program after a quick power reset.

Our testers found that the program sometimes failed to close its process after exit. Child Computer Lock won't keep out anyone but the most inexperienced user, and even a 6-year-old might figure out that powering off the computer allows him or her back onto the system. The short five-day demo should give you plenty of time to find out if it works for your household.
