Though its name implies that its focus is on weather information, you'll get more than you bargained for with this intrusive Internet Explorer add-on. Rather than just attaching a toolbar to your IE window, Weather Station On Your PC immediately hijacks your home page. You have to go into the Preferences menu to change the default settings.

The toolbar itself isn't much in terms of weather. Sure, you can enter any location in the world and even choose between Celsius and Fahrenheit, but the button only displays a temperature. When you hover your mouse over the button it only shows the selected location. Clicking the button takes you to a page with more detailed weather information, but other weather toolbars provide information like wind speed and general conditions without going anywhere else. The toolbar includes a search field, a reference window, and a news button with preset RSS feeds. The additional three buttons are strictly advertisements, and it's hard to see any value in them.

The forecast isn't good for this IE add-on, which is free but no bargain.

In association with Intel
Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
