KeyCamX is simple and effective home video surveillance and Webcam software for Macintosh. It can record images simultaneously from multiple cameras compatible with your Mac (both Intel and PowerPC), for example internal or external iSight, mini DV camcorder, or any USB and FireWire video device supported by Macam, IOXperts or EchoFX drivers. You can choose to store taken Jpeg images on your Mac, .Mac iDisk or FTP server with automatic removal of old recordings. It features smart motion detection with pre-alarm buffer for recording images of what happened before actual triggering event.

There are many options for making audible alarms with embedded or custom sound effects, sending Emails, starting custom AppleScript files or executing Unix shell scripts. Every camera can be easily adjusted on the fly with brightness, contrast and mirroring/rotation settings.

Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
