Although its proxy list presented several duds, Anonymity Gateway does eventually come through to allow anonymous Web surfing. The program has a stylish interface that's easy to configure and even easier to use. Simply select a proxy from the provided list or insert your own for testing.

Usable proxies are listed on the drop-down menu for browser use. Although we ran across several unusable proxies, we were inevitably able to hide our true IP address. Anonymity Gateway also cleared away our Internet Explorer history at user-defined intervals, but not our temporary Internet files as promised.

The program specifies Netscape, Opera, and Avant on its list of supported browsers, but only the ticker boxes to select Internet Explorer and Firefox are open. When you launch your browser, a page about the program's proxy server system, CoDeen, appears and then reroutes you to your home page. While it has more quirks than we'd like, Anonymity Gateway is a user-friendly method for anonymous Internet surfing that novices may want to try.

Featured Talkback

Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
