Although it really only performs a couple of simple jobs, this application still makes a handy pickup. True to its name, Perfect Shutdown can shut down your computer at user-specified times. You also can schedule the program to log you off, restart the PC, lock the computer, or run selected applications on a one-time basis or at regular intervals. It's nice that Perfect Shutdown lets you access its settings both from a system-tray icon and from a taskbar that appears at the top of your screen. The taskbar offers buttons for immediately performing such actions as shutting down, logging off, or suspending. Unfortunately, since the application lacks password protection, you can't use it as a tool for restricting PC access to other users. The 30-day trial period is adequate, but the cost to register is a bit high, especially considering the program's narrow focus. Still, forgetful users or those concerned with conserving power will find Perfect Shutdown a simple and effective solution.

In association with Intel
Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
