Check your speedThis futuristic third-person shooter is framed by the trial of Kyle Hardlaw for the multiple killings of government officials while on secret assignment on a rebellious planet. However, the story line is simply a vessel for a well-designed small-squad shooter. As Hardlaw, you'll control yourself and command four other soldiers in a daring raid on a well-defended foundry erected in the middle of a cavernous wilderness. Three full levels from the Dark Citadel portion of the game provide an ample amount of free content, and the three available difficulties let both newbies and veteran gamers jump right in at their own talent plateaus. A few graphics glitches spoil our final rating (the 515MB file doesn't help either), but Alpha Black Zero appears to be on the right track. You control Hardlaw's position directly, and unless you get too far ahead, your squad will follow close behind. You can select any of your comrades individually, all at once, or in configurable groups. You can issue each soldier or group four main commands: hold position, regroup, hold or open fire, and select type of fire. Each soldier has light and heavy artillery, and at tougher difficulties ammunition is at a very high premium, so you'll need to maximize your supplies to succeed. Although this demo is the output of a work still in progress, we hope the considerable number of glitches are fixed in the final version. Most glaring are motion-detection bugs that will keep one of your team spinning in circles until you come back or perch a dead enemy in the middle of the air next to a cliff. When we shoot somebody off a mountain, we want to see his lifeless body careening recklessly through the air!
