Despite a decent set of features for capturing videos of PC activities, Hero Screen Recorder has a problematic interface and questionable stability that hold it back. Though the program has an innovative and modern design, it's unintuitive. For example, we assume you can play back your new clips in the program's main window, but we could never figure out how to do so. We wish the publisher would have included help files or a tutorial to clear up matters. The utility lets you capture the entire screen, cursor moves, separate windows, and screen areas, and you also can record audio and keyboard sounds. Hot Screen Recorder saves videos as AVI, GIF, EXE, or HSR files, though in our tests, the program's output quality was merely average. To make matters worse, the utility seriously slowed our computer's speed when going about its business. Although the program lets you merge videos and cut specific frames, that process also takes too long. Hero Screen Recorder might suit experienced users with powerful PCs, but most other folks will probably want something easier to use.

Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
