This application offers a suite of tools for optimizing your Web-surfing experience. SurfStream's main window is logically organized, with clearly labeled sections for boosting browser performance, blocking ads, tuning your connection, and checking your Net speed. The Browser Boost section is really just a proxy server that displays such statistics as download and upload speeds. Our tests over a LAN actually showed that the proxy server slowed our surfing a bit, but results may vary depending on your own connection. If you want to fine-tune your connection, SurfStream offers a list of presets for DSL, cable, dial-up, and wireless, though you also can make your own custom profiles. The pop-up tool lets you block specific sites and was mostly effective, though it did let through a few floating ads. Finally, if you need to ensure that your ISP isn't pulling a fast one on you, you can quickly find out just how much bandwidth you're getting by using the Speed Check tool. While folks on a network might not get much benefit from SurfStream, home users should definitely give it a go.

Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
