This pop-up blocker efficiently dispatches pop-up windows and provides a number of configuration options, but it's exclusive to Internet Explorer users. AdPurger places an additional toolbar button on your IE bar, giving you quick access to enable and disable filtering. You can conveniently configure the program options under the Tools menu. Use the slider to easily adjust filtering levels, or to create different filter policies for individual Web sites. We also liked that the program keeps tabs on the number of blocked pop-ups, advertisements, background sounds and images, scripts, applets, and ActiveX. Moreover, you'll find features for blocking referrer URLs and a hotkey option for allowing pop-ups. When the program stops an ad, it is supposed to alert you by playing a sound, but this didn't work in our tests. AdPurger capably handled most pop-ups and advertisements and expedited loading of Web pages. However, it didn't install a program group on the Start menu, and its effectiveness is limited to Internet Explorer, ignoring other popular browsers like Mozilla and Opera. Overall, AdPurger works well and offers a decent choice for frequent IE Web surfers.

Why do so many (virtually all) software packages think that they are so important that they have to be started automatically every time the computer boots? What is the largest number of "speed access", "update check", "camera download" and whatever other background programs you have ever seen running? Of those, how many did you really need?
